We aim to mix high standards with an accessible, friendly and inclusive singing experience that is connected with our local community and builds on our long history and the proud musical tradition of our region.
We strive for excellence, and aim to perform to the highest standards of choral singing. To help us achieve that, our rehearsals focus strongly on the best use of the voice as well as detailed attention to the meaning of the music. Our singers are auditioned but do vary in experience – some of our members have a lifetime of singing to a high standard, while others have only started singing recently, but all contribute to the choir’s sound and all benefit from the focus on training in rehearsals.
We engage high quality professionals to work with us, from soloists, to orchestras and guest conductors. We sing the standard oratorio repertoire, but complement it with music by living composers; at any one time we may be singing music from 1600 to the present day.
We are proud to be a Choral Society and to be part of that tradition but we also enjoy opportunities to look forward, whether that be in our programming or our presentation. We perform in interesting places, and we rehearse and perform interesting music. Our objective is to find the right balance between traditional and modern, and to appeal to both the young and the not so young. We want more singers to be inspired to come on the journey with us.
