From left to right, Charlotte Town (soprano), Scarlett Reilly (soprano) and Niki Zohdi (tenor).
Thanks to generous sponsorship from VCEP Ltd, Halifax Choral Society is delighted to offer paid choral scholarships for the 2025–26 season. These scholarships are ideal for young singers looking to develop their vocal technique, musicianship, and confidence within a supportive, ambitious choral environment. Scholars will receive personal coaching from our Artistic Director and Conductor, Anthony Gray, and may also have opportunities to develop wider musical skills such as conducting, section leading, or coaching small groups. There is no age limit, though the scheme will particularly suit sixth-form, undergraduate, or postgraduate students.
What the Scholarship Offers

- Priority consideration for all solo roles in concerts (with additional renumeration where appropriate)
- Opportunities to develop conducting and coaching skills
- The chance to work closely with a long-established choir with a national reputation

“I ask that the scholars are a strong presence in their part, especially during the note-learning phase. I have often asked the scholars to take sectionals alongside me, depending on their willingness and ability. All scholars contribute to their section’s ‘Vocal MOTs’, our new version of re-auditions, in which I and the relevant scholar provide feedback on aural skills, vocal technique, and more. Vocal MOTs begin at 7pm on the relevant part’s weeks, and I always schedule these around the scholars’ availability.”
How to Apply
If you are interested in becoming a scholar or have any questions before applying, please email conductor@halifaxchoral.org (Anthony Gray, Artistic Director & Conductor). There is no closing date. Applications will be considered as they arrive, and auditions arranged as soon as possible.
